Acupuncture at OC Well Studio

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical practice that dates back thousands of years. It is based on the concept of Qi (pronounced "chee"), which is believed to be the vital energy that flows along meridians or pathways in the body. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), illness and pain arise when there is an imbalance or blockage of Qi flow. Acupuncture aims to restore the balance of Qi by inserting needles into specific acupoints along the meridians.

Traditional acupuncture

Traditional acupuncture is holistic in nature, focusing on balancing the body's energy systems and treating the root cause of the ailment. The insertion and manipulation of acupuncture needles are intended to regulate the flow of Qi and restore harmony within the body.

The theoretical basis of acupuncture is rooted in TCM concepts such as Yin-Yang balance, the Five Elements, and the circulation of Qi. Acupuncturists diagnose and treat patients based on these principles and may also include herbal medicines or cupping in their treatments.

The process: Every patient’s healing journey with acupuncture will be unique, but generally acupuncture effects are cumulative in nature and combined with lifestyle advise, other therapies like cupping and sometimes herbs, can be an incredible addition to your health routine.

  • Yes! Cupping therapy is also available as a 10 minute add-on therapy using plastic cups, or as a stand alone treatment as fire cupping - this is the more traditional method that uses heat and is a little more intense for deeper detoxification. • Yes! Acupuncture is very safe when practiced by a qualified practitioner. Disposable, sterile needles and clean needling protocols make the risk of infection negligible, and the only side effect after treatment might be a small bruise. Acupuncture, as practiced throughout North America, has one of the best safety records of any form of health care.

As far as pain goes, it isn’t painful at all. The extremely fine-gauge needles are about the width of a few human hairs. Acupuncture needles, unlike hypodermic needles, are neither hollow nor rigid, and the tip is shaped to increase the patient's comfort during insertion. Dr. Pierce's acupuncture patients often report that they don't even feel many of the needles!

  • Patients generally feel pretty great after an acupuncture session! Immediately after an acupuncture treatment, you may feel a little “out of it” or like you are floating. This is typical. It is encouraged that you move slowly at first and relax immediately after. It is typical to feel very relaxed the rest of the day after an acupuncture treatment and sleep especially well the first night after a session! You may feel a mild soreness at the site of some of the needle points, but this isn’t significant and usually dissipates quickly.
